Lygia Pape

Lygia Pape’s artistic research consistently explored the thresholds between body, space, and perception, with light, luminous materials, and reflection playing a central role in her practice. In works such as the “Ttéias” (late 1970s–1990s), she used fine golden or silver threads stretched through architectural space to create shimmering, web‑like volumes that respond dynamically to light and viewer movement, turning the gallery into a mutable field of radiance and shadow. These installations dissolved the boundary between object and environment, inviting the spectator to move through and around the work. Her use of reflective and metallic surfaces such as gold leaf, mirrored or polished elements, and luminous pigments further emphasizes the skin‑like quality of surfaces.

TTÉIAS Series

Of all of Pape’s works, the “Ttéias” is most emblematic of her artistic process. This series consists of an immersive staging of semi-transparent prisms, which were created using gold thread. Lygia invented the word “Ttéias”, which is a pun based on the Portuguese word for “web” (“teia”) and for “a person or thing of grace” (“teteia”). In 1978, Lygia Pape began to experiment arranging and rearranging metallic strings together with her students at the Parque Lage Gardens in Rio de Janeiro. The “Ttéias” were first conceived in 1979, but it was not until the 1990s that it was produced in full scale.
