Tavares Strachan (1979, Bahamas) is a contemporary artist, who lives and works between New York City and Nassau. He works in intersections of art, science, and politics, with media such as painting, drawing, sculpture, installation and video. His scientific interests lie mainly on aeronautics, astronomy, deep-sea exploration, and extreme climatology, while his political themes include invisibility, displacement, and loss, questioning historically canonized narratives that marginalize or obscure others.
The artwork discussed was Robert (2018), a backwards bending neon skeleton pulsating with light. The artwork is based on Robert Henry Lawrence Jr., the first African-American astronaut, who died in a training accident. He, like many other people of marginalized groups, has remained quite invisible in mainstream history-writing. In addition to political themes, the discussion revolved around figurative light art, and the organic style in the use of neon.
