Stephen Antonakos’s artistic research centers on how abstract neon, geometry, and architectural space can generate a direct, non-symbolic encounter with light. He began incorporating neon into his sculptural practice around 1960. By then, neon became the primary medium through which he developed his abstract forms and site-specific installations.
He was working almost exclusively with spare, complete, and incomplete geometric forms that refuse literal reference and instead construct “real things in real spaces.” His investigations range from linear wall drawings in light to three-dimensional installations, back-lit panels, “Rooms,” and “Chapels,” always conceived in precise relation to a given site’s scale, proportions, and circulation.
His research unfolded across both studio practice and the public realm. Since the 1970s, he has realized more than fifty large-scale public works in Europe, the United States, and Asia, using colored neon to redefine building façades, transit stations, and urban gateways as fields of perceptual experience shaped by natural light and the viewer’s movement. In parallel, colored-pencil drawings, collages, reliefs, prints, and later gold-leaf works extend the same questions of how line, color, and light construct an inner and outer “space of attention” onto paper and into object-based media, making drawing both a testing ground and an independent area of inquiry.
Although aligned historically with minimalism and conceptual art, Stephen’s research is inflected by a specifically Greek-American sensibility and a sustained dialogue with Byzantine icon and chapel traditions, particularly in the meditative “chapels” and panel works whose halo-like light suggests a quiet, reflective mental space. He consistently rejected symbolic reading, insisting on pure abstraction, yet his use of color, repetition, and architectural framing invites viewers to register subtle “reverberations” between the lit work, its surrounding architecture, and their own inner states.
