Mary Weatherford (1963–) is a California born and based painter of abstract or abstracted motifs. Her pieces are often based on art history or (feminist) reinterpretations of its established oeuvre. Weatherford often combines neon tubes and painting, making the neon a stroke of light among the painted ones in her artworks.
The artwork discussed was Flaying of Marsyas, a series seen in the exhibition of the same name in Venice 2022. It is an interpretation of the titular painting (1570’s) by Titian, focussing on its colour scheme, with (mostly) single, bended neon tubes of varying white tones on the paintings. In addition to the paintings themselves, the exhibition space was discussed, especially the difference a darkened space would possibly have made.
