Grazia Varisco

Grazia Varisco is one of the leading figures of Italian kinetic and programmed art, whose work investigates the relationships among time, space, perception, and the viewer. From the outset of her career, she focused on concrete art, emphasizing change, chance, and interaction rather than the finished, static object. As the only woman and co‑founder of Gruppo T in Milan (1959), she co-shaped one of Europe’s important collectives in this field, contributing to the “Miriorama” series and to the broader programmatic‑art networks that linked Italy to international movements.

Her practice spans from kinetic installations and environmental works to recent series that revisit modular structures and serial repetition, always attentive to the provisional and the “in‑between.” Her early “Tavole Magnetiche” (1959–1961) and the iconic “Schemi Luminosi Variabili” (1962–1969) exemplify her interest in real‑time transformation, using simple materials—magnets, glass, motors, neon, and rotating screens—to generate shifting patterns of light and shadow that involve the spectator directly.

GRUPPO T

1959–1964 Active in artistic research as an exponent of the Gruppo T. Founding members were Giovanni Anceschi, Davide Boriani, Gianni Colombo, and Gabriele Devecchi. Grazia Varisco joined in 1960. Their collective exhibitions were characterized by experimentation, movement, and viewer participation. Their shows often centered on “Miriorama” series exhibitions, which presented variable works, programmed graphics, and works open to change over time rather than fixed, static objects. They also emphasized collaboration across individual and group projects, with different members sometimes working in pairs or small combinations, especially as the group evolved toward environmental works. A key trait was the rejection of the traditional artwork as a personal, closed object in favor of research into perception, time, and interactive visual experience.

The Miriorama cycle is central to Gruppo T’s research on perecption: instead of fixed endpoints, images and structures are conceived as open processes, relying on time, movement, or viewer interaction to complete the work. Collections and later retrospectives treated this series as the core experimental laboratory of the group’s early practice.

GRUPPO T was in exchange in mutual contexts with the artists of the EQUOIPO 57, GRAV, NOUVELLE TENDANCE and ZERO networks, but there is no evidence of mutual contexts with the DIMENSIO, or GUTAI networks.
