Bruce Nauman’s work spans a range of media, including drawing, painting, sculpture, light and sound, video, and performance. It is driven by an unbridled urge to experiment. Bruce’s interest in ambiguity and shades of meaning in everyday human experience. His aesthetic vocabulary is built on a set of recurring forms, materials, and strategies that make light, space, body, and language the core of his art.
Repetition is central to his oeuvre, appearing as endless movements, loops, and rotations, and he often returns to earlier works in new pieces. His artworks are disruptive, penetrating, absurd, and playful, often demanding both physical and mental engagement.
Bruce confronts major themes affecting many: life, death, sex, love, violence, frustration, and helplessness. His oeuvre confronts viewers with raw, sometimes unsettling emotions such as isolation, frustration, alienation, unease, restlessness, or boredom, and engages with life’s existential dichotomies and the essence of being an artist.
